BATTLES OF THE MALTA STRIKING FORCES (with Edwin R. Walker)
H/B (1) 1974 (ISBN 0 7110 0528 1) H/B (2) USA Edition 1974.
Throughout the sea war fought in the Mediterranean between 1940 and 1943 the island of Malta, located as it was directly astride the main Axis supply routes to North Africa, played a crucial role. The disruption of the German and Italian supply and fuel convoys played a vital, (if often ignored) part in the defeat of Rommel and the expulsion of Axis forces from that theatre of war.
The exploits of submarines and torpedo bombers working from the island have been given a high profile, less well known were the many successes achieved by the striking forces of Royal Navy cruisers and destroyers operating from that base in the face of the whole combined German and Italian naval and air power. Detailed accounts of their main battles, a wide selection of photographs of both hunters and hunted and excellent lists of the ships involved made this one of the better of the "At War" series. Writing 34 years after its initial publication Andreas Biermann said, "This is the second book I have read by Peter C. Smith and like the first, (Hold the Narrow Sea) it was a delight, and is highly recommended. He added:- "I do not think that any serious student of the sea war in the Mediterranean can do without this book.....I hope that Mr Smith would find the time to update the book, or maybe expand it..."
