HARD LYING; the birth of the destroyer, 1893-1914.

H/B (1) 1971 (ISBN 7183 0192 7) H/B (2) USA Edition 1971.

The story of the birth of the destroyer in the Royal Navy. Because of their small size and the atrocious weather conditions in which they were often forced to operate, the Admiralty introduced "Hard Lying" money for their crews and this reflected life aboard these lithe but frail vessels.

The origins behind the introduction of the new type of warship in the late 1890's, and the class-by-class developments that followed. From the tiny "turtle-back" vessels like the Havock and Hornet, through the seagoing ships of the first Tribal classes to the eve of World War I and massed torpedo tactics. Each class is described and their war history given. Rare photographs complete the picture.
